A look at our upcoming book, What Grows Here? Indoor plants
What Grows Here?
Design of the book
The basics
Fall has arrived and with that comes the production of a new book. This year we have decided to focus on indoor plants. We are planning on a release date sometime early next year.
We've decided to split this book up into areas of the house. This seemed logical to us because most people by a plant for a specific location.
The book will begin by giving you all the basics on light and temperature, watering, pruning, pests & diseases and propagation. The rest of the book consists of questions. Here are some samples.
Living rooms
Bathrooms
Hallways and entrances
I have an older home that has a living room with a beautifully detailed vaulted ceiling and a large west-facing window.
I've just renovated the bathroom that attaches to my guest bedroom and would like a plant for the dark corner above the medicine cabinet.
We've just moved into a new home with a spacious foyer and I'd like to fill the space with plants. It's great but more than a little difficult to access for watering.
Kitchens
Bedrooms
Basements
I usually keep a lightly scented candle in my kitchen, but I think I'd like to replace it with a fragrant plant.
My kids are seven and nine and want to grow plants in their own rooms. Generally, they are quite responsible-but kid-proof plants wouldn't hurt.
A friend of mine is moving away for year and has asked friends to adopt a few of his plants. I agreed to take a few, but I live in a basement suite and don't know what plants are best for this space.
Schools
Commercial settings
Hospitals and nursing homes
I'm a Grade 5 science teacher, I've decided to build off the kids interest in 'observing' and have them do an experiment that can teach them about how light (or the lack of it) effects plants.
The reception area of our accounting office is quite uninviting. We'd like to add plants that make the space warmer and more interesting.
My mother has just moved to a senior's lodge, and she's really missing her garden. I'd like to buy her some small plants that will constantly bloom in her room.
