Getting ready for the cold...

All of the alpines that are hardy and robust enough to overwinter are being repotted in preparation for the winter. The plants are taken out of their pots and planted in new soil to give their roots a chance to spread

On sale

Remember there are still many great perennials on sale like this Phylliopsis, with its delicate pink blooms.

Fall at Hole's

This is the time of year we get to see some of the interesting seed pods like this Ariseama (Dragonroot). These are last season's plants and Bob Stadnyk examines each individually to see if they are good enough to overwinter.

Sneak Preview 2002

Most plants from the 2001 season are gone, but already the new perennials are on their way in. There are some fabulous new hostas in already, like "Medusa', "Little Sunspot', 'Wolverine', Alvatine Taylor' and more. Also the first of Hole's exclusive new Saxifrage Collection are in. We will have 130-150 different saxifrages in next year, many available in North America only from Hole's.

Plants by the numbers

Poinsettias are one of the most predicatable plants to grow; they will always grow and bloom according to a strict schedule if the conditions are correct. For example, from the time short days begin and the blooms are triggered, theri will be exactly six leaves produced and then a flower.

Needless to say, the staff spend a lot of time measuring and monitoring the plants to ensure a perfect crop.

 The perfect poinsettia

In order to ensure the poinsettias bloom on time for Christmas the plants are tracked using graphical tracking sheets. The elusive perfect poinsettia will always grow between the two lines.

Spooks and more...

The garden centre is filling up with lots of decorating ideas for Hallowe'en. So far the squishy heads are the staff favorite!

Fall Bloomers

There is still lots of colour in the show garden like this Phlox paniculata 'Harlequin'.
